'Richer than the roof of paradise' was Walpole's description of this grand room. Everywhere the visitor looked the room was ablaze with light, and their eyes would go up to fifty-seven feet of glorious white and gold vaulted ceiling formed by gothic fans made out of papier mache. The walls were hung with crimson damask; one wall contained embrasures lined with mirrors. A wall of windows was opposite. The mirrors were covered in an intricate gilt fretwork like that used in the trelliswork of the garden below, and were surmounted by gilded canopies.
