The Hall,
with its front door through which only personal friends would have
entered, and its myriad of small doors, was one of the great focal
points of Strawberry Hill, rising like a tower through the two, and in
places three, storeys of the castle to the uppermost point where four
grisaille quatrefoil glass panels were set in the roof. At night it was
lit by a single candle in a japanned lantern suspended by a yellow and
black cord from the central rose of the ceiling.
