Registered Charity No. 1089660

Emerging from the foot of the Round Tower the visitors found themselves in the Great Cloister. Viewed from the main road Strawberry Hill, with its apparently disparate group of ancient looking towers, pinnacles and castellations, looked like a medieval castle. However, seen from the river the view of the Great Cloister, built between 1760 and 1761 on the left of the house below the Long Gallery, gave the impression of a gothic abbey.

Above: The Great Cloyster, ink, wash and water colour. Possibly by John Carter. Above: The Great Cloister sealed off from the elements has been used as office and storeroom.

It will become the team room of the renovated house.
