Emerging
from the foot of the Round Tower the visitors found themselves in the
Great Cloister. Viewed from the main road Strawberry Hill, with its
apparently disparate group of ancient looking towers, pinnacles and
castellations, looked like a medieval castle. However, seen from the
river the view of the Great Cloister, built between 1760 and 1761 on the
left of the house below the Long Gallery, gave the impression of a
gothic abbey.
