By moving
the stairs when he first bought the house from their original position
on the site of what became his Little Parlour, to the new hallway, a
tower had been created which linked the early three-storey part of the
house with the new two storey Library and Refectory wing. Thus a variety
of shadowy levels were created which exuded Walpole's 'gloomth' - a word
he coined to describe the unique Strawberry Hill mixture of warmth and
gloom.
